Published: 01/02/2018

Lakhvir Rellon, Head of Community Engagement at BSMHFT, has won the Mental Health Star Award for Birmingham in the first Thrive West Midlands Mental Health Commission Awards which took place on Wednesday 31 January at the Hawthorns (West Bromwich Albion Football Club).

Lakhvir is an ambassador and trainer for Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), working with a number of public, private and third sector organisations to raise mental health awareness and train people on how to respond in a crisis situation.

Lakhvir said: “Winning this award is a really humbling experience because the most amazing people have been nominated tonight. I’m so pleased because it endorses mental health first aid training which I am really passionate about.

“People are much more likely to come across somebody in crisis because of mental health than someone having a heart attack. So many people come back to say they have used the skills they’ve learnt within hours so I hope I’m doing my little bit towards the Thrive ambitions.”

Faheem Uddin, Lead Governor and Yewcroft Community Mental Health team were also shortlisted in the Thrive Awards for Birmingham.

John Short, Chief Executive, BSMHFT presented The Solihull Award to Gary McLeod.  Gary was recognised for his work in establishing the Fiveway Café, a place where young people can get emotional support from staff and peers.

The awards were held to mark the first year of the Thrive West Midlands programme by celebrating the ground breaking work being done across the region to improve mental health and wellbeing.

Guests included members of the Mental Health Commission (including Sir Norman Lamb) and a range of representatives from different organisations across the region, including local authorities, the NHS and the charity sector.
