Relevant Policies and Procedures.

There are a number of Trust policies and procedures that all researchers working within the Trust should be aware of and comprehend.  These are

  • confidentiality

  • information systems security policy

  • information governance strategy

Here is information on some of our policies:

Assessing the wishes and feelings of Adults who lack Mental Capacity on their recruitment to research studies.

In line with the Mental Capacity Act (2005) researchers are required to assess the wishes and feelings of adults who lack mental capacity before they are recruited to research studies. The policy and procedure provides both information and full details of the arrangements the Trust has put in place to ensure adults who lack mental capacity are safeguarded. Researchers who feel that a personal consultee would benefit from additional advice and support from an independent advisor should contact the Research & Innovation Office for a list of possible names and contact details.

Researchers who cannot identify a personal consultee should contact the Research & Innovation Office for a list of possible names and contact details of nominated consultees.

Identifying potential participants for research studies

The Trust’s research programme contributes to regional, national and international knowledge about mental health.  As such, screening for potential participants for our studies plays an important part in study recruitment. The policy and procedure below ensures that screening for potential participants can only be conducted by appropriately trained Trust-approved researchers working within a strict ‘safe haven’ framework

Policy for governing relationships with the pharmaceutical industry

The Trust is committed to collaborating with the pharmaceutical industry to ensure its service users receive the highest quality standards in care and value for money.  BSMHFT staff can have either a research or a sponsorship relationship with the pharmaceutical industry.  All relationships must be open and transparent and governed within the corporate procedures set out in the document below
