What might an appointment with a Psychologist be like?

When you first go to see a psychologist, you will be offered one or more assessment appointments, that will last 60-90 minutes.

During the appointments, the psychologist may ask you lots of questions about your life, so that they get to know you and the difficulties you have been experiencing. You may also be asked to answer some written questions as part of this process.

By the end of the assessment appointments, you and your psychologist will decide whether psychological therapy will be helpful for you, and if so, which type is likely to suit you best.

If you go on to have psychological therapy, you will meet regularly with your psychologist, usually once every 1-2 weeks. During these sessions, you and your psychologist will talk together in a private room for up to an hour. At the start of the therapy, you and the psychologist will agree how many sessions you will have together, for example, 20.

Sometimes you can have psychological therapy in a group. You would be invited to go along to a group usually for a fixed number of appointments. Other members of the group will be people who have similar difficulties to you.
