People are referred to an occupational therapist when they are having difficulties carrying out everyday tasks which most of us take for granted. This can often involve the types of activities listed above.
An occupational therapist's work starts with a thorough assessment of the person they are treating. First of all, the occupational therapist tries to find out why the person can't perform certain daily tasks. They then plan a programme of therapy that will help the person to overcome the problems he or she is experiencing.
This can include group sessions and/or individual activities. Group sessions can focus on relaxation and life skills. Individual activities can involve meal planning, time management or training for employment.
Therapy can be short term, perhaps a one off session, or years of ongoing support. It will depend on the needs of the person.
