Chelmsley Wanderers

The Chelmsley Wanderers Football Club Mission Statement:

”To promote and encourage people with and without mental health problems to play football together, to benefit all players by competing on equal terms and to advance social inclusion in their community through the power of football.”

Together with players from Birmingham we were invited to play equivalent teams in Frankfurt over the World Cup weekend June 10th 2006.  As part of the Fan Friendly activities organised during the World Cup we were invited to play several teams based in Frankfurt to promote the positive role of Football.

With football’s role in challenging prejudice in mental health fully supported by the FA, SHIFT (an NHS initiative), and the England Fans Association we were looking to show how people with and without mental health problems can play competitive sport together.

Covered by the BBC in Frankfurt and with articles to appear in the local and national press, we are generously supported by Solihull PCT, Solihull Social Care and also by Caroline Spelman our local MP for North Solihull, the Shadow Secretary for Communities and Local Government.

We want to know how come when everyone is valued on the field of play without prejudice can the same not always apply in everyday life?

This was a great opportunity to enrich the lives of those players that felt access to sport was severely limited and the publicity associated with the event has moved the positive agenda for social inclusion forward.
