Admiral Nurses

Our Admiral nurses are experienced mental health nurses who work with families and carers of people with dementia.  The Admiral Nurse team is run jointly by our Trust and a charity called for dementia.

They can:

  • provide emotional support to carers
  • provide information and practical advice
  • help carers improve their coping skills
  • help carers to access services

This is usually done through one to one sessions either over the telephone or at the carer's home. The aim is to be there for carers whenever they feel they need some support

The amount and type of support a carer needs may vary over time.  A nurse might be asked for support once, or regularly over a number of years. The team aims to provide continuity of care - this means that carers can stay in touch with the team even if they go through a period where they feel they need less support.

Carers can refer themselves to the admiral nurse team.  If you care for someone with dementia and feel that you need some extra support, you can refer yourself to our Admiral Nurse Team.

To do this you need to be caring for someone who:

  • has had or is expected to have a diagnosis of dementia
  • has a GP in the catchment areas covered by our team
