BME Services

Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust is committed to providing a culturally sensitive and competent specialist mental health service to older people. The BME service consists of BME Leads and BME Champions with a special interest in this area, who aim to help our Trust deliver quality, person centred care to older people who have highly diverse cultural, linguistic and spiritual needs.

Our Aims

  • To facilitate access to mental health services by reducing barriers and changing perceptions that prevent people with mental health difficulties from seeking or receiving appropriate specialist support
  • The help provide a culturally appropriate, responsive and sensitive service that meets the needs of all service users from all cultures and backgrounds
  • To help and support mental health staff in their efforts to deliver a culturally competent service through training initiatives, advice, information and support
  • To liaise with primary care service providers in order to ensure that people from BME communities receive appropriate mental health care and help when required
  • To support community organisations and promote awareness of mental health issues in the community

The team can support people in the following ways:

  • Joint working

  • Telephone advice

  • Assessment

  • Signposting (whereby we will point you in the right direction for other forms of help, care and support

  • Support groups

  • Referrals to appropriate organisations

  • Supervision

  • Listen to concerns, queries, and suggestions

  • Training
