Birmingham Memory Assessment and Advisory Service

Birmingham’s Mental Health Commissioners and our Trust, working in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, are implementing the next phase in a range of developments in older people’s mental health services with the introduction of a Birmingham Memory Assessment and Advisory Service (BMAAS).

The service will be manned by a multi-disciplinary team, to include: operational and clinical leads; a clinical psychologist/high intensity psychological therapist; six senior practitioners (including an OT specialist); a psychology assistant; four dementia advisers, employed by the Alzheimer’s Society and a team administrator.

Our aim is to improve the early recognition, identification and referral for specialist assessment of people with a possible diagnosis of dementia.  By providing a responsive, person centred assessment and diagnostic service, based in a primary care/ community setting and working closely with GP’s, we hope to minimise the stigma associated with seeking help for age related memory problems.  The service will offer support from a Dementia Adviser whose role is to provide a highly responsive information and signposting support service to people with dementia as the first priority, but also to those who support and care for them.
