Addictions Training Academy

Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust is a major provider of substance misuse treatment services within Birmingham. These services have helped to develop and evaluate a number of innovative treatment approaches in collaboration with the University of Birmingham. Examples include the Birmingham Treatment Effectiveness Initiative (see www.nta.nhs.uk), Social Behaviour & Network Therapy, and the COMPASS programme. The Addictions Training Academy is a new venture that will allow the dissemination of much of this good practice through short courses and on-going consultancy support aimed at practising clinicians. The courses will be underpinned by evidence for effectiveness and taught by practising clinicians. The Academy is led by Dr Ed Day, Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Addiction Psychiatry.

Current Training Courses

  • The Brief 5-Step Family Intervention, run by Professor Alex Copello

  • Mental Health for Drug Workers – 2 one-day courses (basic and advanced) aimed at increasing the skills of drug workers in the management of common mental health problems (details TBC)

  • The Birmingham Treatment Effectiveness Initiative (BTEI) – a range of training is available in the three core elements of BTEI – organisational change, improving assessment and care planning, and node-link mapping. The attached leaflet describes these key elements, but interested clinicians are advised to contact us directly to develop a tailor-made package of training (details TBC).
