Blood Borne Virus Service

The global epidemic of hepatitis B has led to a national vaccination programme being identified as a vital public health response.  Injecting drug users who have not been protected by Hepatitis B vaccine are at high risk of acquiring and subsequently transmitting hepatitis B and for this reason, this group has been targeted for vaccination in the UK since 1985.

Increasingly Hepatitis C is a silent epidemic in the drug using population therefore requiring accurate information regarding the virus and making blood testing for Hepatitis C accessible to these harder to reach clients.

Our Trust, with funding from the Drug Action Team, established the Blood Borne Virus Project in February 2003.  The Team offers clients using drugs smoking or injecting the opportunity to be vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B and to be screened for Hepatitis B, C and HIV.  The BBV Team attend over 15 drug services in Birmingham and Solihull on a weekly or bi-weekly occurrence.

Services offered;

  • Advice and information on blood-borne-viruses-harm    reduction
  • Testing for Hepatitis B and C and HIV (dry blood spot testing available)
  • Hepatitis A and B Vaccinations
  • Support with positive diagnosis and referral to appropriate specialist

We also hold a Hepatitis C support group first Thursday of the month between 4-6pm for anyone who is Hepatitis C or any concerns in relation to it.
