The most common mental health problems are depression, anxiety and stress. Depression affects around 1 in 5 people and anxiety about 1 in 10.
More long-term conditions such as schizophrenia and bi-polar affective disorder (manic depression) are also fairly common. Roughly 1 in 100 people will experience one of these conditions.
Substance misuse is another common problem, with 1 in 3 people being addicted to a substance at any one time.
Amongst older people, the most common mental health problem is dementia. It affects around 1 in 20 people over the age of 65, and 1 in 5 people who are over 80. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease, affecting around 500,000 people in the UK.
