Work experience

Are you thinking about a career within Mental Health?

We offer a wide range of Work Experience Programmes to help support and grow a skilled, diverse and flexible workforce that meet the needs of our service users; both now and in the future.

Work Experience is a fantastic way to gain an insight into a particular career and develop an understanding of working and caring for people in a mental health setting. It will help build your confidence and give you an understanding of the required attitudes, behaviors and values that are expected in a working environment. This experience will help you to make an informed choice on your future career options.

The types of opportunities we offer are listed below:

  • Insight into Mental Health Programmes 

Working along with our trained Staff, we are delivering Insights into Mental Health Awareness Schools for applicants of school and college ages. Applicants must hold a specific interest in Mental Health.

Please see dates below for 2018:

Summer 2018:

Year 10/11 = 10th – 13th July 2018

Year 12+ = 17th – 20th July 2018

(Applications are subjected to a shortlisting process.Documents must be sent back to the Work Experience Team by no later than Friday 31 March 2018. Any forms returned after this will not be accepted!) 

  • Prince’s Trust – Get into Programme 

In conjunction with the Learning Hub and the Prince’s Trust, we offer three-week placements of 15 hours a week to unemployed young people who have attended the Prince’s Trust Programme at the Learning Hub.

The next BSMHFT programme will be in March/April 2018.

  • Work Experience Placement 

We hold strong links with local schools/colleges and aim to support students by promoting careers within Mental Health. In order to ensure a fair opportunity is given to all applicants, please ensure the following criteria is met before contacting the Work Experience Team:

  • to qualify for clinical placements, you must be:
                    - aged 17 or above
                    - and must be in year 13
  • priority is given to students who live or study within the Birmingham and Solihull postcodes

Due to the high volume of requests we receive, we are only open to Work Experience requests from:

January – February

August - September


  • Psychology Placements


Any applications made for Psychology will be forwarded to our Psychologist for their review, if you do not hear back from anyone within 4 weeks, unfortunately we will not be able to progress your application on this occasion.
