Nurses

Nursing, as defined in Our Strategy for Professional Nursing (2011-2014) is:

  • the use of clinical judgement in the provision of care to enable people to improve, maintain, or recover health, to cope with health problems, and to achieve the best quality of life, whatever their illness.

  • developing and maintaining therapeutic relationships - caring, collaborative partnerships with our service users grounded in respect, sensitivity, acceptance and trust.

  • firmly rooted in recovery – optimism, collaboration, hope, perseverance and social inclusion. It is enabled by continuing professional development and reflection on practice, which equips our nurses with the skills to meet this unique role.

We currently have around 1,330 registered nurses working in a variety of roles in our many and varied clinical environments across the city. We have a number of different vacancies.

Our nursing service is totally committed to the national 6Cs values set out in Compassion in Practice – namely, Care, Compassion, Commitment, Communication, Courage and Competence. We have developed our own Trust badge scheme to recognise nursing staff who reflect these values in their practice.

Since launching the scheme in 2013 over 160 staff have successfully applied for their Trust badge and these are awarded at special ceremonies twice a year. Our scheme has earned national recognition from NHS Employers and NHS England.

Our services can only be as good as the people who deliver them and so we are passionate about helping our staff to develop their potential. We welcome applications from newly registered nurses and those nearing registration and we offer an excellent preceptorship programme providing support in your first few months after qualification.

Following application, shortlisted candidates are invited to an assessment event where we explain more about the Trust and the positions currently available. You will also be asked to undertake a numeracy and drug calculations assessment, a group exercise and an interview on this day.

Celebrating our nurses

Each year we hold two events to celebrate our nurses and HCAs. Levi, one of our CPNs, is our latest 6Cs registered nurse award winner.
