Pride 2011 blows through!

Volunteers from the Positive Mental Health Group and Birmingham Gays and Lesbians Against Depression (BGLAD) ensured that visitors to Birmingham’s Gay Pride event were given plenty of information on mental health support.

Despite it being an extremely windy Pride, the volunteers on the stall managed to field numerous enquiries and hand out information on support groups and services.  A number of pride-goers signed up to join the trust as members.

Faheem Uddin, chair of the Positive Mental Health Group and trust governor, was delighted to welcome Birmingham’s new Lord Mayor, Anita Ward, to the stall:  “I think she was pleased to see us there”, explained Faheem, “she told us that her husband works for a mental health charity and she knows how important it is for people to get help to recover”.

Chris Perry, from BGLAD, was helping on a Pride stall for the first time, he noted,” It was busy all day but I really enjoyed it and I want to volunteer more often, because I think it helps with my own recovery.”

There was good news from the Birmingham Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Trust, who announced a lottery grant of almost half a million pounds towards a dedicated health and wellbeing centre.  The trust understand the need for tailored mental health services for the LGBT community, through research showing high levels of poor mental health, alcohol dependence and low self esteem among the city’s LGBT communities.

Positive Mental Health Group meets on the last Thursday of each month from 2.30pm at Friends Institute, Moseley Road, Highgate.  Bus: 50 Telephone 07800 728 825.

BGLAD meets every Thursday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Healthy Gay Life, Bromsgrove Street, in the Gay Village. Telephone 0121 440 6161.
