Working in partnership with criminal justice agencies – call for evidence

The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner recently held a summit on mental health and learning disability, following on from Lord Adebowale’s Report on Mental Health and Policing.

The key message was that partnership working is critical to ensure that those with mental health issues are identified and treated appropriately.

The ‘Social Cohesion and Community Safety’ scrutiny committee is made up of ten local councillors from all the political parties in the city council. They have the job of making sure that Birmingham City Council and other agencies are reducing inequality across the city, are tackling crime and are keeping people safe.

For their first inquiry of the new municipal year, their aim is to explore how Birmingham City Council and its partners can work together more effectively to identify and reduce the number of those with mental health issues entering the criminal justice system.

In particular they are keen to understand how and what agencies in Birmingham need and want to be better placed to work together more effectively and support those with mental health issues to ensure that they are not a risk to themselves or the community.

They are inviting people and organisations from across the city to send their views on this complex issue.
