New app helps carers to take care of themselves

Published: 12/04/2016
A new app, designed by Meriden Family Programme in partnership with families and carers, is now available to download to help carers to take care of themselves.

MyCare app has been created to support carers and families maintain, or improve, their own health and wellbeing with tools that can help with relaxation, sleep, exercise and stress management. The app also provides information about local and national organisations as well as a function to help record key information, such as personal support networks and quick access to contact details, including what do to in a crisis.

Dr Gráinne Fadden, Programme Director at Meriden Family Programme and Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Taking care of someone who is living with a physical or mental health condition often means that there is very little time to take care of yourself.

“Working in partnership with carers, families and friends of services users, we have created a helpful app for people to download free of charge. We hope it will be another useful tool to help carers take care of their own health and wellbeing.

“Feedback from those who are using the MyCare app has been extremely positive and we are delighted with the reviews it has received already where people highlight the benefits to them.’’

The MyCare app is free to download for phones and tablets, which run on Android or iOS, from either the Google Play or the Apple App Store.  It can be downloaded:

•    from a phone or tablet Apple App Store by searching on MyCare;
•    via a link from the Meriden Family Programme website:

For those without a smart phone or table, a web-based version of the app can be viewed on:

John Short, Chief Executive, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a fantastic app and I would encourage everyone to download it and take a look at the range of comprehensive functions included in its design.

“The MyCare app has been developed from years of feedback received from, and in full partnership with, the carers and families of those living with a mental health condition and has evolved into a useful resource that can be used by anyone.

“It only takes a few minutes to download and provides access to invaluable information and advice that are all designed to support carers to take care of their lives while taking care of others.”
