Carrying out research

Research is the foundation of important advances in treatment, and carrying out research in the NHS provides an exciting opportunity to learn, explore and improve the healthcare that we all receive. When we talk about research we are including any type of research activity that staff members want to undertake or support, including small scale projects, undergraduate and postgraduate projects, nationally funded NIHR research or internationally funded research.

If you would like to get involved as a researcher on a current research project, or find a research project for your patients to participate in, please visit our our current research page for more information. We can support your research, whether you work for the Trust or as a student wanting to carry out research within the Trust. Please send your query to the Research and Innovation Department.

Clinical Trial Facilities

Clinical trials have to be conducted within the standards set by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). We therefore aim to ensure that all the necessary equipment and facilities required to conduct clinical trials are available and regularly maintained.

These facilities are available to ensure that the appropriate measures are taken to guarantee:
• the safety and comfort of service users and their carers
• security for trial medication, service user records and any other confidential information
• effective and secure communication of anonymised data during trials between the CRF researchers and colleagues based in pharmaceutical companies
• reliability of trial data

We have two Clinical Trial Facilities within the Trust at our Barberry and Northcroft sites:

The Barberry
25 Vincent Drive
Edgbaston
Birmingham
B15 2FG

Northcroft CTFs
190 Reservoir Road

Both facilities have a physical examination room for use in clinical trials use and contain:

• Computer
• Printer

• Fridge
• Freezer -20C (The Barberry only)
• Freezer -80C (The Barberry only)

Additional equipment required for specific trials can be sourced as required. All equipment used during drug trials are regularly maintained and calibrated. To enquire about the use of these facilities, please contact the Research and Innovation Department.
