NHS Veterans’ Mental Health Complex Treatment Service

The NHS Veterans’ Mental Health Complex Treatment Service (VMH CTS) is a specialist community mental health service for armed forces veterans.

It is for those experiencing complex mental illness related to their time in the military, and is here to help veterans regardless of when they left the armed forces.

It is a national service and in the West Midlands it is provided by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Veterans
Our Complex Treatment Service is for former forces personnel in the West Midlands including Birmingham and Solihull, the Black Country, Coventry, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The Complex Treatment Service provides therapies for veterans experiencing psychological trauma (such as post-traumatic stress disorder), alongside a range of other treatments and advice including help with substance misuse and physical health care.

We appreciate that the culture of the armed forces is unique and the service is provided by a team who understand this. The service has been shaped by feedback from veterans and their families.

All referrals into our service come via the Veteran’s Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison Service (TILS).

TILS seek to increase the access to mental health services for veterans and members of the Armed Forces who are approaching discharge.

TILS consists of three elements:

  • Transition: the service works with the MoD to offer mental health support for Armed Forces veterans approaching discharge.

  • Intervention: personnel approaching discharge will have an assessment within two weeks of a referral, providing access to treatment and support from a care coordinator.

  • Liaison: patients that may benefit from NHS care will be referred to the services where they will receive appropriate support or treatment.

To access the service as a veteran, patients must be a resident in England, have served in the Armed Forces for a full day, be registered with a GP in England and be able to provide proof of their military service.

Anyone meeting the criteria can self-refer or request a referral from a health care professional or service charity.
