Stepping stones

Keeping yourself safe:
At some point in our lives we all experience dark thoughts of wishing we were dead or hurting ourselves in some way. However, when you are depressed or anxious these thoughts can become more intense, more upsetting and acting on these sometimes can feel like a good way to make your problems go away. Thoughts although distressing are very different from actions.

What shall I do if I have these thoughts?
Speak to your BHM worker as thoughts can be difficult to manage and we have knowledge to support you with these.
If you are not under our service, speak to your GP as they have access to all kinds of support services which can be helpful and they can recommend the right service for you.

Tell a friend or your family as support from friends and family can be invaluable.
Talk to Samaritans (08457 90 90 90) This is a 24 hour listening service where you can talk in confidence about any problem.

What shall I do if I think I might act on these thoughts?
It is important you keep yourself safe. This is an emergency situation and you must…
  • Go STRAIGHT to your GP
    If your GP is closed….
  • call the out of hours service (BADGER 0300 555 0303)
  • call NHS Direct 111
  • or attend your nearest A& E department or dial 999

The aim of our service is to make you feel supported in learning to manage and deal with your problems in an environment that is confidential and caring.

You can be screened on the same day with no need to book an appointment. You will be seen on a first come first served basis. We apologise that at busy times you may need to wait to be seen. Once you have been screened we can advise on the best treatment option for you.

We also provide the Amman Walk-In Service in Handsworth and Sparkhill where our staff can speak to you in Punjabi, Mirpuri, Urdu and Bengali as well as English.
