Community Mental Health Teams for Older Adults

Community Mental Health Teams for Older Adults are groups of mental health staff that support people aged 65 and over who are experiencing moderate to severe mental health difficulties.

The teams are made up of psychiatrists, psychologists, community psychiatric nurses (CPNs), social workers, occupational therapists, support workers, physiotherapists, community rehabilitation workers, Admiral nurses and workers from voluntary agencies.

Community Mental Health Teams can offer:

  • psychological therapies such as counselling
  • medication
  • training in skills such as coping with depression
  • advice on housing, benefits or employment

A person referred to a Community Mental Health Team will often see more than one member of the team so that he or she can get the best support for his or her needs.

Carers are closely involved with the teams when planning the care that their patient receives.  The teams also offer support, education and assessments for carers, meaning our staff look at the needs of the carer as well as the patient, so that both get the right help they need.
