The new inpatient development at Highcroft has reached another exciting milestone, with names now chosen for the building and its two wards.

The new facility will be called Rowan House, while the two wards within the building will be known as Willow Ward and Birch Ward.

The names were selected to reflect themes of resilience, recovery, growth and hope – values that are central to the care and support provided across Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

The naming process was shaped by collaboration with colleagues and Experts by Experience (EbE), helping to ensure the new development reflects the aspirations and experiences of the people who will use and work within the building.

Rowan House takes its name from the rowan tree, which is widely recognised as a symbol of resilience, renewal and protection. Known for flourishing in challenging environments, the rowan represents strength, adaptability and hope – qualities that mirror the journey many people take as part of their mental health recovery.

The names chosen for the two wards also carry powerful meanings.

Willow Ward is named after the willow tree, a symbol of flexibility, healing and resilience. Its ability to bend and adapt to changing conditions has long been associated with inner strength and recovery.

Birch Ward draws inspiration from the birch tree, which represents renewal, fresh beginnings and growth. Often linked to new chapters and positive change, it reflects the opportunities and hope that recovery can bring.

The significance of the names will help shape future storytelling and communications about the development and may also inspire elements of the building’s design, including artwork and interior features.

Their contribution has helped create names that embody the spirit of hope, recovery and renewal that Rowan House will represent for patients, service users, carers and colleagues for years to come.

As work on the new development progresses, Rowan House, Willow Ward and Birch Ward will become important symbols of the Trust’s continued investment in modern, therapeutic environments that support recovery and deliver high-quality mental health care.
