A pioneering new supported living service is helping women make the transition from secure mental health care back into community life.
Dawn House, a partnership between Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT) and Birmingham-based women’s charity Anawim, has opened at the Birmingham Women’s Centre in Balsall Heath. The service provides a safe, supportive and trauma-informed environment where women can continue their recovery journey while developing the skills and confidence needed for independent living.
The seven-bedroom service has been created to support women leaving secure mental health settings, offering tailored care and practical support to help them build brighter futures within their communities.
As part of a two-year pilot programme, women living at Dawn House benefit from personalised support provided by a multidisciplinary team alongside access to Anawim’s extensive wellbeing, education and community resources. Opportunities for learning, volunteering and employment form an important part of the service, helping residents develop independence and work towards their individual goals.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to delivering person-centred support that recognises the unique experiences of women and helps them achieve sustainable recovery.
Since opening, Dawn House has already begun making a positive difference to the lives of the women it supports.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, residents took part in a creative flower-foraging activity designed to promote wellbeing and encourage connection with nature. The women gathered flowers and foliage before creating colourful vase displays, providing an opportunity for relaxation, creativity and reflection.
Participants described the session as calming, enjoyable and uplifting, highlighting the value of meaningful activities in supporting mental health and recovery.
Dawn House represents an important addition to local mental health services, bridging the gap between secure care and independent community living. By combining specialist mental health support with practical opportunities for personal development, the service is helping women build confidence, strengthen their recovery and take positive steps towards greater independence.
As the pilot develops, Dawn House will continue to support women in creating new opportunities for themselves, offering hope, stability and a strong foundation for the next stage of their recovery journey.
