A digital transport and logistics system is helping Summerhill Services Limited (SSL), Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust’s wholly owned subsidiary company, reduce waste, lower carbon emissions and improve operational efficiency.

Since introducing the Podfather transport and logistics management system, the team has completed more than 29,000 digital Proofs of Delivery, saving 58,348 sheets of paper and reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 292kgCO2e – the equivalent of planting seven trees.

The move forms part of SSL’s ongoing commitment to embracing digital solutions that support more efficient ways of working while contributing to the Trust’s sustainability goals.

Podfather enables teams to plan and optimise delivery routes, track vehicles and deliveries in real time, complete digital vehicle inspections and provide instant proof of delivery. The system also automatically sends updates to Trust colleagues, helping to improve communication and reduce administrative processes.

By replacing paper-based systems with digital alternatives, the introduction of Podfather has delivered measurable environmental benefits while helping teams work more efficiently and providing greater visibility across transport and logistics operations.

The initiative supports the Trust’s wider sustainability ambitions and demonstrates how relatively simple digital changes can have a positive impact on both service delivery and the environment.
