From 1 September 2025, BSMHFT will be going smoke-free. Smoking and tobacco use will not be allowed anywhere on Trust premises, including outdoor areas and entrances.
The Trust first banned smoking in 2016. During the COVID-19 pandemic, limited smoking was permitted in some garden areas, but this will now be fully withdrawn.
This decision supports the health and wellbeing of our patients, service users, staff, and visitors. It also aligns with NHS and government guidance to create safer, healthier environments.
Smoking rates among people with mental health conditions are over 50% higher than in the general population, contributing to a reduced life expectancy of 7 to 25 years. Despite assumptions, people with severe mental illness are just as motivated to quit smoking as others.
Hospital admission presents a valuable opportunity to support quitting. Evidence shows that stopping smoking can lead to fewer readmissions and better health outcomes. It can also improve mental health by reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, with some studies suggesting benefits comparable to antidepressant medication.
