Inclusive Coaching Introduction Training

Learning and Development are excited to announce that a new Inclusive Coaching Introduction course is now available for staff to access. The training, commencing 22 June 2026, has been developed in collaboration with various network groups, departments and feedback from drop-in sessions in order to meet the needs of the staff of BSMHFT.

This is a one full-day, in-person introductory course with supplemental resources available on a dedicated Connect page to build knowledge and understanding.

The Trust has developed a new Inclusive Coaching and Mentoring Framework designed to remove barriers, increase equity and strengthen career development opportunities for all colleagues – particularly those from global majority and disabled backgrounds. This work directly supports the NHS People Plan, Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) and Workforce Disability Equality Standard (WDES) commitments, all of which highlight persistent disparities in access, progression, psychological safety and lived experience within the NHS workforce.

This initiative supports BSMHFT’s goal to create a culture where all staff feel valued, included and supported to grow. According to the International Coaching Federation, organisations that “invest in strong coaching culture unlock the full potential of their workforce, leading to better talent and outcomes. They are also more than twice as likely to be high-performing organisations than those without a coaching culture.” Some of the benefits include increasing job satisfaction, improving job performance, enhancing communication, reducing turnover and boosting engagement.

Training activities include:

  • Understanding the role and impact of coaching within BSMHFT
  • Learning the differences between Coaching and Mentoring
  • Attaining Awareness-level Inclusive Behaviours
  • Using effective questioning techniques and demonstrating active listening skills
  • Discussing the importance of Psychological Safety, Ethics, the role of Chemistry Meetings and managing expectations
  • Learning how to use simple Coaching tools
  • Reviewing several Coaching models and practicing the GROW model in practice scenarios
  • Instructions on how to enrol onto West Midlands Employers (wme.mye-coach.com)

All coaches would need to adhere to the Additional Roles Framework and receive agreement from their manager for release time to undertake coaching which will be discussed during the training session.
