People in Erdington are set to benefit from improved mental health care as construction officially begins on a new inpatient facility at Highcroft.
Today, Paulette Hamilton MP visited the Highcroft site to mark the start of the main construction phase – a significant step forward in delivering modern, purpose-built mental health facilities for local communities.
The visit was hosted by Vanessa Devlin, Executive Director of Operations at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, and brought together frontline staff, clinical leaders, contractors and partners who are working together to bring the development to life.
The construction start marks a major milestone for the Trust and reflects a long-term commitment to improving the quality, safety and experience of care for patients and staff.
During the visit, Paulette Hamilton MP met with staff and partners, toured the site and joined a milestone photo to recognise the progress made so far.
Paulette Hamilton MP said:
“It’s fantastic to be here in Stockland Green to see this important investment in mental health services for our local community. Facilities like this will make a real difference to people’s lives – giving patients the dignity, space and support they need closer to home, while also providing a better working environment for NHS staff. I’m proud to support this development and look forward to seeing it progress.”
The Highcroft development will deliver modern inpatient environments designed to support recovery and create safer, more therapeutic spaces, as part of the Trust’s wider improvement programme and Five Year Strategy.
Vanessa Devlin, Executive Director of Operations, said:
“Today is about more than breaking ground – it’s about what this means for the people we serve. This development reflects our commitment to providing the highest standards of care, rooted in the community and in line with our values. We are creating facilities that will support compassionate care, strengthen our connection with the local community, provide a positive and inclusive culture for our staff, and enable more creative and modern ways of delivering support and care. Together, these changes will help us deliver better outcomes for patients, families, and the communities we serve.”
The project is one of the Trust’s most significant recent estate investments and is a key part of delivering better mental health care for communities across Birmingham and Solihull.
