We are pleased to announce that Non-Executive Director, Sue Bedward, has been appointed as our new Senior Independent Director (SID), bringing significant experience, insight and commitment to the role.

The SID is a vital part of the Trust’s governance – the system of rules, practices and processes by which the Board ensures the Trust is well-led and delivering safe, high-quality care. The SID provides an independent perspective, supports our Chair, Phil Galye, and helps make sure the Board operates effectively.

Key responsibilities of the SID include:

  • Supporting and advising the Chair, including leading the Chair’s annual appraisal
  • Acting as a link between the Chair, Non-Executive Directors, our Chief Executive, Roísìn Fallon-Williams, and the Council of Governors – especially where concerns arise
  • Being available to Directors, Governors or members if normal channels for raising concerns are exhausted
  • Helping to resolve disputes and maintaining open, effective relationships between the Board and the Council of Governors

Sue who has been a Non-Executive Director at BSMHFT for two years and is ‘privileged’ to take on the new role, said:

“I step into this position with a strong sense of responsibility and look forward to working closely with colleagues and Governors to provide constructive challenge, support and an independent voice in service of the Trust, our patients, service users and local communities.”

Congratulations to Sue, who we are confident will be a strong and supportive presence for the Board as she steps into this important role.

Sue Bedward
