On Saturday, almost 300 people came together for the vibrant Feel the Rhythm, Beat the Stigma afternoon at Mary Seacole House in Winson Green – the first in a series of four events taking place across June and July.

Bathed in sunshine, the carnival-style event welcomed families and community partners for an afternoon filled with live music, food, creativity and connection. The event created a welcoming space for open conversations about mental health, while celebrating the rich diversity and talent within the local community.

A highlight of the day was the debut performance of the newly formed NHS choir ‘Lift Every Voice’. Bringing together NHS colleagues from across Birmingham and Solihull, the choir  is part of a new Joy at Work initiative which aims to promote the positive mental health benefits of singing, both for staff and the wider community across Birmingham and Solihull.

Beresford Dawkins, Community Engagement Lead, said: “Saturday was a fantastic example of what we can achieve when we work closely with our communities. I’m delighted that so many people joined us – we had really positive feedback from staff and patients on wards 1 & 2 and Meadowcroft who took part in Music, Sports, and African Drumming workshops.

“These events celebrate everything that makes our communities strong – creativity, generosity and collective spirit. These strengths endure, even when people face significant challenges. That’s why it’s so important we continue working together to break down mental health stigma and make support more open and accessible.”
